• To promote the teaching and research in the European area of other colleagues from Economics, Law, Government, History and Sociology;
• To complement the services of the University’s European Documentation Centre;
• To heighten the profile of the 3 faculty positions/awards established earlier under the Jean Monnet programme - the Readership in European Community Law, the Lectureship in European Economic Integration, and the Chair in European Political Integration.

Current Activities of the JMECE include:

• Annual maintenance of the Directory of European Activities at Essex;
• Promotion of the European Studies degrees;

• Supporting post-graduate recruitment and promoting collaborative teaching programmes;

• Support and promotion of the Graduate Colloquia Series in the Department of Government;
• Support of interdisciplinary research projects and the research activities of members of the Centre, for example on EU Security Policy and Enlargement;

• Supporting the Journal of European Integration;

• Maintaining links with outside bodies and visitors.
