Events Formats

Open workshop/mini-conference
Focus: Outlining basic assumptions and methodology of each approach

Paper-givers address questions such as:

- What is understood by discourse?
- How are objects of analysis delimited?
- How are texts/documents selected?
- What are criteria of selection? (e.g. representativeness)
- Are distinctions drawn between text and context; the linguistic and non-linguistic; the discursive and non-discursive?
- In what ways do agency and subjectivity play a role in your approach?
Background reading for each session provided
Format: Mini-conference over 2 days; 5 sessions (each focussing on a particular approach) followed by a closing plenary

Expert seminars:

Master classes

Open workshops
10 funded places for early career researchers. Funding application form is available here
Focus on use of different methodologies; hands-on experience and comment on work of ECR (presenters to provide short background reading material for participants)
Format: each master class to be followed by plenary session raising more general issues for discussion

Exploratory Workshop

Focus: Reflecting on the analysis of a particular policy document/policy area from the perspective of each distinctive approach.
Format: Separate in-depth analysis of a common document/related policy areas from each perspective, followed by a plenary
Area of work: ‘Identity, difference and community cohesion’
To facilitate constructive engagement across approaches and disciplines
