Car Share
Colchester and Southend car sharing scheme
The University of Essex has its own online car share scheme, where
all Colchester and Southend-based students and staff can register.
Car sharing can save you money, save wear and tear to your car and,
at Colchester, will help to free-up spaces in the University’s car
parks.
Even if you don’t car share every day, just two or three times a week
could make a big difference. For example, if you share a ten-mile return
journey with one other person, taking into account fuel and parking
charges, you could save around £4 per day – that’s almost £90 per month
if you travel in every day – or £1,000 per year.
At present, only 181 staff and students at the University are
signed-up and using the scheme – so there’s tons of potential for more
people to join and car share. The more of us who join, the more options
there are to share journeys.
How it works
There are two ways to join the car share scheme online, at the
student car share website and
at the Colchester
2020 travel together site – both routes in will direct
you to our own scheme (the database isn’t branded as the University of
Essex, but it is our section of a national database).
Just add your details, your home postcode, selecting ‘Essex
University’ from the list, and making sure you select ‘only members of
private group’ – to put you in touch with other students and staff using
the University’s car sharing scheme.
You can choose how people contact you and your information is not
passed on to any third party.
Who’s in?
Out of the 181 people that have already joined up to the
car share scheme:
- 45 joined in
December 2009
- 55 per cent would
otherwise drive in on their own
- 43 per cent are
both seeking and offering lifts/p>
- 64 per cent are looking
to do a daily car share
- Mondays, Tuesdays and
Wednesdays are the most popular days for car sharing
