for students

The Careers Centre aims to help all students and graduates in issues related to jobs, training and choice of career path. Students may find these following guidelines helpful.

We CAN provide you with

• a free, confidential & impartial guidance service for the duration of your studies and for a further three years after you graduate
• access to student careers advisers
• help in your decisions about job hunting or further post graduate study
• careers-related information resources and events
• on-line jobs pages with vacancy details for permanent and temporary jobs and work placements
• advice on making applications and going for interviews
• opportunities to meet employers through careers events

We CANNOT provide

• job or employer matching service where we find you a specific job
• write your CV or letter for you or complete your application form
• advise you on your eligibility to work in the UK or the likelihood of an employer gaining a work permit for you

Job vacancies we seek out part-time, full-time and graduate opportunities for University of Essex students. All vacancies can be found at JobsOnline, and part-time opportunities can also be seen on the notice-board located in the government corridor on Level 5, behind the campus shop on Square 4.

The Information Team visit the Careers Centre to speak with a member of the Information Team. You may also email the team with any information query.

Professional Skills Development Module An exciting initiative from the Careers team. Ten weeks of interactive sessions providing the framework for students to develop the skills that enable them to successfully plan their future. For further information, click here.

CV Clinic Visit the Careers Centre to book an appointment to receive feedback on your CV. Appointments are available Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. A drop-in session operates on Wednesdays, 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

One-to-one meetings appointments with a Careers Adviser for registered students or recent graduates of the University of Essex.

Inspiring Internships Summer placements and Graduate internships opportunities organised by the Careers Centre.

Frontrunners the University’s unique, on-campus student placement scheme.

The Careers Centre at Southend Gateway Building, Floor 3, in the Open Study Area. You can book a telephone or Skype careers interview with a careers advisers. To book an appointment please email careers@essex.ac.uk.

Going Global our subscription to Going Global gives you access to their database for international opportunities.

The University of Essex on-line aptitude tests practice verbal and numerical reasoning tests and receive automatically generated feedback on your results. Recruiters increasingly assess potential candidates with aptitude tests asnd it is essential that you become familiar with them.

Prospects Planner the job exploration tool for higher education students and graduates to help you identify what you want out of a job; generate new job ideas and check out your existing ones.

TARGETjobs Careers Report The career planner which will reveal your strengths and skills, pinpoint graduate jobs and careers that suit you and set you on a positive plan of action.

EXODUS The Careers Europe database of international careers information. Now only available on-line. Please visit the Careers Centre to obtain logon details.

Transferable Skills Assessment (part of the Research & Enterprise Office's ECIF project) Test your Transferable Skills with this new online assessment which shows you what your skills are and how to build on them.
