Local Newspapers:

- East Anglian Daily Times (Wednesday)
- Colchester Evening Gazette (Thursday)
- Essex County Standard (Friday)
- Essex Chronicle (Friday)

These newspapers are held in the Careers Centre and you are welcome to come into the Centre and look through them.

Local Advertisements

Look at adverts in local newsagents/supermarkets. Shops, restaurants and bars tend to advertise jobs in their windows.

Signpost

Signpost is an independent charity who specialise in providing free services to those seeking employment. They offer help and guidance in areas such as writing CVs, completing application forms, interview techniques, personal development and job search skills. Signpost have resource centres in the Wilson Marriage Centre, Barrack Road and in Greenstead Library. These centres are equipped with computing facilities offering access to the internet, desktop publishing, letter writing etc. Trained staff are always on hand to assist with any enquiries and one to one guidance sessions may be available. All the services offered by Signpost are free and anyone is welcome to use them. You can call them on (01206) 861800 (Greenstead Library) or (01206) 791149 (Wilson Marriage Centre).

The Jobcentre

The Jobcentre is located at 138 High Street Colchester. (Next to Williams & Griffin) Tel: 01206 288900.
The Job Centre is set up specifically to help people back into work. The can offer advice on job seeking, have copies of all the local papers, and have a large selection of regularly updated job vacancies. Their website can be found at www.jobseekers.direct.gov.uk.

Jobseeker Direct

Jobseeker Direct is a quick and easy phone service which keeps you in touch with the latest job vacancies and helps you find the job that's right for you. Once you find a job you're interested in, they'll tell you how to apply. They'll send you an application form and, where possible, ring the Employer there and then to arrange an interview. Telephone number: 0845 6060 234.This service is available to anyone who is looking for work, and the lines are open weekdays 8.00am - 6.00pm, and Saturdays 9.00am - 1.00pm. All calls are charged at local rates.

Recruitment/Employment Agencies

Agencies recruit staff for employers. They deal with all types of employment, and some specialise in specific types, i.e. IT, Manual, Clerical, Etc. You will need to register with each agency individually and have an up to date CV. We recommend you search for a recruitment agency via The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), www.rec.uk.com. Reputable agencies should be registered with the REC, and you can search agencies by specialism and location.

Other places to consider:

University of Essex Human Resources for full and part-time job vacancies within the University of Essex.

Students' Union. The Students' Union advertises jobs in its bars and catering outlets online.
