The Essex Graduate

Employability is much more than skills. Employability is about creating a rich educational experience that helps students develop as rounded individuals, able to chart their course through life and fulfil their potential.

The concept

We have identified four qualities which should characterise the Essex Graduate:

  • globally engaged and ethically aware
  • enterprising and prepared for the future
  • able to apply their subject understanding creatively to enrich the wider world
  • scholarly and equipped for research and lifelong learning

These build on personal and cognitive development; bring together generic and subject-specific capabilities; and also combine practical abilities, ethics, values, and individual strengths.

Our vision of the Essex Graduate is integral to our Employability Strategy, so we will be supporting staff with a range of exciting curricular and extra-curricular projects over the coming years, including:

  • support for internships and frontrunner placements
  • one-to-one advice and guidance
  • ways to embed employability in departmental life
  • alumni links
  • support for international students, graduates and widening participation students
  • employer relationships
  • the Big Essex Award, which will appear on the degree transcript
