Knowledge Gateway

Our masterplan

Watch our new video that tells how we're developing the Knowledge Gateway as the location of choice in the eastern region for knowledge-based enterprises in science, technology and the creative sector. It draws on the University of Essex’s global reputation for analytics and data science and outstanding support for SMEs, and is set to employ more than 2,000 people.

"From our research, and work all over the UK, we know that the growth and survival rate of start-up and SME businesses, and thereby their economic impact, is enhanced by providing flexible and affordable property solutions; self-supporting communities and access to skills, training and knowledge."
Chris Allington, Managing Director, Oxford Innovation Business and Innovation Centres

Adjacent to our Colchester Campus, the Knowledge Gateway strategically integrates the University of Essex to the town of Colchester and the region. Set amidst 43 acres of mature parkland, and accessed via the A133 dual carriageway, we began developing the site in 2010 with an initial £12m investment that has created superb infrastructure, including a major signalised road junction, landscaping works, roads, utilities, and pavements, footpaths and cycle routes.

Only 46 minutes from London Liverpool Street, Colchester is served by a good road network linking London, Ipswich,Cambridge, and Norwich, Kent and the south east of England. The Channel ports are easily accessible via the Dartford Crossing. London Stansted Airport is 30 miles away and takes under an hour to get to from our Colchester Campus. London Southend Airport is 44 miles away.

The park's entrance has been carefully planned to ensure an accessible and welcoming place, with a tree-lined avenue and landscaping that fosters interaction. The Knowledge Gateway is already home to a cluster of 15 innovative SMEs located within Parkside Office Village. By joining these ambitious start-ups, and basing your business here, you'll gain competitive advantage as a valued member of the Knowledge Gateway business community.

Locate your business here

Whether you're an SME or a large multinational, at the Knowledge Gateway we have space to suit your needs. Phase one of Parkside Office Village opened in the spring of 2014, and 15 SMEs now occupy these units, creating a flourishing business community of security technologies, digital marketing solutions, cloud-based technology solutions and web design companies.

Encouraged by demand work is now underway to develop the next phase of Parkside Office Village, with further 435 sq m of office space available August 2016. We are also seeking to develop over 37,000 sq m of additional, new commercial floor space as a major Innovation Centre.
