In 1933 land at East Tilbury was sold to a Czechoslovakian shoe company,
Bata Shoes, to establish a new shoe factory. As well as a factory a garden
city was developed to house the factory’s community of workers.
In 1993 the Bata estate and factory site was designated a Conservation
Area as the full importance of the site was realised. John Tusa’s
lecture will focus on the history of the factory and its establishment in
East Tilbury before the start of World War II. His lecture will also explore
the community surrounding the factory, set within the context of the era,
and will be illustrated by photographs and rare archive film.
