Biography

I joined the University of Essex in October 2006 as the Course director of MSc.Cardiac Rehabilitation after five years as a lecturer in sports science. I completed my PhD. entitled: ‘The response of heart rate variability to exercise in healthy and clinical populations’ at Brunel University, supervised by Professor David Brodie.

I also undertake research into the physiological effects of exercise in cardiac rehabilitation patients. I am a qualified cardiac rehabilitation instructor and run the phase IV clinic at the university; The Phoenix Club.

MSc. Exercise & Nutrition Science. (University of Liverpool)

BA (Hons) Psychology and Physical Educatio (University of Liverpool))

Current research

I am prinicipal investigator for the East of England Healthy Hearts Study. This is the largest health and fitness survey of UK children and adolescents and currently has over 10 000 participants age 10 - 16 years. The longitudinal part of this study will follow 2000 of these children intially measured at age 11 for the next five years.

I have been working with SusTrans to evaluate the Bike It! project to encourage cycling to schools.

I am currently evaluating the use of functional capacity tests within cardiac rehabilitation as part of a mult-centre study three NHS trusts.

Paediatric physical actvitiy and fitness.

Geographical and social interactions with exercise: promoting active commuting

Prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease 

Non-invasive measurement of cardiac autonomic function
