Our Research Focus

Our research is subdivided into a number of common areas. This brings together like-minded researchers to permit the sharing of equipment and ideas. Below you will find our research groups, in the orange box on the right you can see a number of research centres focussed on specific biological problems.

Molecular Biophysics

We apply a range of biophysical techniques to study the structure and function of macromolecules, our core interests revolve around metalloproteins and protein dynamics.

Environmental Biology

This group studies changes in the environment and how to address these through the development of biosensors, sustainable agriculture, increases in plant productivity and models of climate change.

Molecular Medicine

Our research is at the basic-clinical interface and employ a range of techniques for studying diseases at the molecular and cellular level.  We have projects on cancer biology, viruses and infection, bacterial infection, basic and reproductive immunology, translational and clinical proteomics, bioimaging and bioinformatics.

Sports Science

The Centre’s research units include Health, Exercise & Active Life (HEAL) and Sport Performance & Fatigue (SPF). Areas of active interest include: paediatric exercise, in vivo biomedical optics, “green exercise”, cardiovascular physiology, indicators of cardiac and psychological health, pacing strategies and limits to human performance.

Research meets Teaching

We believe that to create an up-to-date and exciting learning environment we must link our research to teaching. Please use the links below to find out more about this cross-over:
