PGR coursefinder

PhD courses

Use our PGR finder to find the right PhD or supervisor for you. Studying for your PhD at Essex lets you investigate your topic with depth and understanding. You develop new skills, enhance your professional development and build networks, opening doors to many careers.

Our postgraduate research covers a range of subjects and we offer the following research opportunities:

Our broad academic structure allows us to enhance opportunities for collaboration between different subject areas within biological sciences. In addition, our research is supported by modern, well-equipped research facilities.

PhD studentships

We regularly offer PhD studentships throughout the year, which will be advertised when they are available.

Which research degree?

Studying with us means you can study MSc by dissertation (MSD), MPhil and PhD.

If you're not sure which one to choose, we've provided you with more detail about each research option.

  • MSD

    With our MSD research courses, you will:

    • be part of a laboratory-based programme;
    • complete a year of independent research; and
    • develop your preparation for a PhD.

  • MPhil

    With our MPhil research courses, you will:

    • carry out an independent research programme, usually for a period of two years; and
    • complete the intermediate step before registering on a PhD programme.

  • PhD

    With our PhD research courses, you will:

    • train as an independent researcher who can critically assess other research work;
    • develop comprehensive knowledge of at least one area of biology; and
    • study for a duration of three to four years.

    All students are initially registered as MPhil/PhD students. You can be transferred to the PhD in the first half of your second year if you have made satisfactory progress.
