The marine sciences group has strong ties to the University of Wellington, New Zealand, including a joint PhD into connectivity between coastal marine habitats (Dr. Smith). The two universities are also currently planning a research cruise in the Banda Sea, proposed for the autumn of 2008.

Drs. Smith and Hepburn have a joint Wellington PhD student, who is working on the influence of coral reef degradation on Indo-Pacific sponge assemblages.
