Use of diatoms as freshwater quality indicators in the Mekong River
Diatoms (single celled algae) are excellent potential indicators of water quality. This project, in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Biology, University of Chiang Mai, is investigating the use of freshwater diatoms as indicators of water status along the length of the Mekong River, from it’s tributaries in the mountains of Northern Thailand, along the borders with Burma, Laos and Cambodia. Large mega-continental river systems such as the Mekong present challenges of scale not experienced in UK systems, where using freshwater benthic diatoms as indicators is now common practice.
