The estuaries of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa are beautiful and diverse. Extraction of water within the catchment for agriculture and nutrient inputs from coastal towns have all impacted on water quality. This project, joint with colleagues from the Department of Botany at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Port Elizabeth, is using benthic diatoms (single celled algae) as indicators of water quality in a range of estuaries, and is determining the impact of nutrient loading of the functioning of estuarine benthic systems
