MSc in Marine Biology

The Masters course in Marine Biology was launched in 2007. The course was designed to deliver advanced marine biology theory and to provide students with opportunities to develop advanced practical and research skills. The course capitalises on the breadth of research carried out in marine biology at the School of Biological Sciences and provides opportunities for students to engage with current research activities both in the UK and abroad.

The Masters in Marine Biology is taught solely by research active staff. The course provides advanced theory, analytical, experimental and field study opportunities and key graduate level skills.  Assessment techniques are diverse, representing the numerous skills required by modern day Marine Biologists. All students are exposed to the variety of skill requirements but are also able to specialise through their research dissertations, the topics of which are extremely diverse, again reflecting the broad research skill base of the School’s research active staff.

There are two general aims for the Masters in Marine Biology. Postgraduate students who have successfully completed this course should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the key aspects (zoology, primary productivity, mariculture and fisheries, practical and research skills) of marine biology and ecology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applied marine biology (management, mariculture, fisheries and biotechnology).

In particular, the Masters in Marine Biology provides students with the skills required to identify, develop, initiate, report and communicate the outcomes of a research task by drawing on advanced marine biology theory and training in a variety of skills ranging from research proposal and grant writing through to the numerous ways in which career Marine Biologists are required to report their findings.
