Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area, Honduras

 

The Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area is located within the Caribbean approximately 10 km off sure from the Honduras mainland. The coral reef forms the southern most extension of the Meso-American Barrier Reef System. Here researchers from the Marine Sciences group are carrying out a number of protects examining the effects of disturbance on Caribbean coral reefs and, paired with similar studies in the Indo-Pacific, the functional diversity of reef systems. Projects include:

1. Resource partitioning between clear fish species of the Caribbean

2. The ecology, breeding success and conservation management of Hawksbill turtles within the Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area

3. The conservation value of Cayos Cochinos reef systems
