As part of the EU project FACEiT and under a variety of other programmes, we have been investigating the capacity of microbes to clean up marine oil spills. In addition we are characterizing the genes induced by oil pollution and other stresses with a view to their use as pollution-detection biosensors. Specific objectives include:

  • Identification and quantification of the main oil-degrading marine microbes and determination of their roles
  • The influence of temperature, light, biostimulation and bioaugmentation on oil biodegradation and microbial communities

Similar work under this programme is also condicted in France (Étang de Berre), the North Sea and Thames and Colne estuaries.
