Bay of Naples

Two projects run in collaboration with the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn assess the response of growth, calcification and secondary metabolite production along environmental gradients. Of key interest is the natural CO2 vents that flow close to the island og Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This feature enables testing the response of photosynthetic organisms to a natural gradient of pH, and therefore the effect of ocean acidification that has been widely predicted to result from an increase in atmospheric CO2.
