Please read the Travel page (under Travel and Venue), and it would be useful to print a map of the University campus (here) showing the location of the conference venue and the conference accommodation.
When you arrive at the University of Essex go to Conference Reception (Square 3) to collect keys, then to your accommodation (South Courts from 14:00 onwards), and/or to delegate reception in the Lecture Theatre Building (LTB) where you can pick up your delegate pack (from 16:00 onwards). The opening ceremony starts at 19:00 in LTB-8.
Early arrivals (before 14:00) can be catered for, but please inform halophiles@essex.ac.uk in advance.
Late arrivals (after 20:00) please pick up your key from the Security and Information Office on Square 3 (open 24 hours). You can still register for the meeting until ~22:00 in the LTB foyer. Please note that the evening reception in the LTB will finish at 22:00
The main part of the University campus is built on stilts above a former river valley (Valley Road). The tallest brick-built towers in Europe provide a useful landmark (two at the south, and four at the north end of the campus).
Arriving by the X22 Stansted bus From Stansted airport you could book a taxi in advance (~£50 for a 4-seater) or take the X22, which departs from just outside the airport (£16 return). Information on the X22 bus service from Stansted Airport to the University of Essex, Colchester can be found at first bus. Please note that at Colchester Bus Station they usually swap drivers, which usually leads to a 10 minute wait. For midweek arrivals the X22 leaves Stansted at the same time (i.e. on the hour), but arrival times at the University of Essex may differ.
This bus only stops near the junction of Valley Road and Boundary Road (see map here). Walk along Valley Road (~50 m), and take the first steps on the right, skirting the building, up to Square 1. Cross Square 1 and take steps up to Square 2. Cross Square 2 and and as you enter Square 3 turn right to the Conference Reception in the corner (next to Biological Sciences). In total this is about 400 m (with far too many steps).
Arriving by other buses or taxi You can stop at the same bus stop as the X22, but it is much easier to get off at the South Courts bus stop. From here follow the path (mostly downhill) such that you pass between Bertrand Russell and Eddington Towers. Turn right and then immediately left after the second tower, going downhill towards the LTB (where you could temporarily deposit your heavy luggage ), and then proceed to the Conference Reception in Square 3.
Arriving by private car Please email halophiles@essex.ac.uk and request a parking permit. Please park in car park B.
X22: STANSTED AIRPORT – COLCHESTER; SUNDAY Service
RQ = request stop (this is at the driver’s discretion – please check as you get on. If the driver will not go to the University then get off at Colchester North Station and take a taxi.
