About usEUREKA has been established to allow the expertise within the School of Biological Sciencesto benefit the wider community. The University of Essex vision statement makes clear the commitment of the University to work with partner institutions, companies and organisations regionally, nationally and internationally to “to fulfil our social, economic and cultural obligations”. There is thus a strong drive to increase engagement with the local community and business, and to engage in Knowledge Transfer activities, so that the research and understanding within University departments benefits society as a whole. StaffThe day to day running of EUREKA is overseen by Dr. Steve McMellor MIEEM, along with Professor Graham Underwood. Dr McMellor has a background in ecological consultancy, while Professor Underwood, a former Head of the School of Biological Sciencesat the University of Essex, is experienced in the design and implementation of scientific research and consultancy, particularly in the field of marine biology. We also have numerous staff throughout the Department who are experienced in the many aspects of environmental survey, monitoring and research, from microbiology, soil science, genetics, marine biology, ecology, and bioinformatics among others. Full details of our staff and their specific fields of research can be found via the School of Biological Sciencesweb pages. Why choose EUREKAAs well as being leaders in their scientific disciplines, many EUREKA staff from the Department also teach their subject at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as supervising post doctoral research in their fields. By choosing EUREKA to help with your ecological and environmental research and survey needs you are getting the experts who teach and train the staff of many other consultancies! At EUREKA we are also committed to increasing ecological knowledge and so all data gathered can also be used for research into the various disciplines of environmental science and is also used to update local, regional and national records of species and habitats (unless clients express a commercial desire to keep data confidential). Therefore by engaging EUREKA to meet your ecological needs you are also adding to the scientific knowledge base and our understanding of the environment and how it functions, increasing your own corporate social responsibilities.
