This degree will integrate applied and practically-focused conservation skills with ecological theory, and teaching will be delivered in conjunction with and by active practitioners in the field, in particular Essex Wildlife Trust (EWT) and Colchester Zoo (CZ).
Extinctions of species are now occurring at a faster rate than any time in the last 500 million years, and dramatic habitat loss is evident across the globe. Conservation of species, habitats and landscapes in the face of the pressures of modern agriculture and industrialization is a key challenge for the 21st century. This course will focus on the solutions to this challenge, combining a strong basis in ecology with a clear vocational orientation, in which local conservation organizations are deeply involved in the programme. The syllabus encompasses the international perspective, and a tropical field course is an optional component of the course.
The course is flexible, allowing specialization across a range of subjects and taxonomic groups, and allows transition into several other degree schemes within the School of Biological Sciences.
