Who We Are

To improve human health, scientific discoveries need to be transformed (“translated”) into practical applications. These discoveries typically begin at “the bench” with basic research, in which scientists study disease at the molecular and cellular levels. Translational research is the process by which these basic scientific discoveries are more rapidly turned into new ways of diagnosing, preventing, and treating medical conditions at “the bedside”. Through the combined efforts of scientists and clinicians this "bench to bedside" approach enables laboratory based research findings to be applied directly to clinical practice and patient care.

The Essex Biomedical Sciences Institute (EBSI) is a local medical research partnership that promotes “translational research” by bringing together internationally recognised researchers from the University of Essex and top local clinicians from Hospitals across the region. This partnership ensures that EBSI’s cutting-edge research in health and medical sciences is targeted to the needs of patients and the public.

Researchers and clinicians from  EBSI work together to tackle a wide range of common medical and health-related issues such as childhood fitness and obesity, exercise and healthy lifestyles, cancer, heart disease, acute injury, infectious disease, autoimmune disease and dementia. Since all of EBSI’s research takes place in the region, patients in the local community will directly benefit through improved services and patient care.
