Your career options

Skills

We have designed courses that will give you the right skills for future employment. Studying with us, you will learn how to confidently and effectively communicate ideas while developing strong analytical and numerical skills. You also gain key skills relevant to any career, particularly through teamwork and working to deadlines.

Diverse career options

All our students are supported to produce a personal development portfolio of their studies which acts as a training record to be given to potential employers. The strong practical components of our courses mean you have all the subject-related skills required for degree-related employment, as well as skills for any other career that you choose.

If you are thinking of becoming a researcher, scientist or specialist in the public or private sector, then postgraduate study is often a requirement. An MSc or PhD will help you to stand out from the competition and give you a deeper understanding of your chosen subject.

Careers that our graduates have gone into include the pharmaceutical, food and biotechnology industries, hospitals, research laboratories, healthcare, teaching and more.

Subject areas where our graduates have enjoyed success:

  • Biology, ecology, conservation and marine sciences

As the world's environmental problems increase, the demand for qualified biologists and ecologists continues to grow. Our alumni have entered a range of careers in research laboratories, consultancies, business and industry, conservation practice and environmental assessment. Others have pursued a career in teaching, publishing or management. A high proportion of our graduates take further study in this area through MSc or PhD degrees.

  • Biochemistry and biomedical science

The knowledge and experimental ability you acquire in our biochemistry and biomedical science courses are useful for laboratory-based careers in the private and public sectors. The main employers in this area include the pharmaceutical, food and biotechnology industries as well as hospitals, clinics and healthcare companies. Some of our previous graduates have gone on to work in sales, publishing and management while others have chosen to enhance their career opportunities by studying for MSc or PhD degrees. An increasingly popular option is for graduates to move on to 'fast-track' degrees in medicine or dentistry.

  • Sports and exercise science

The sport, fitness, health and leisure sectors are currently very successful and provide a variety of careers for sports and exercise science graduates. Our courses develop your skills in numeracy, information technology, communication and time management, which are important to all employers. Typical career destinations include healthcare, teaching, and the health and fitness industries or postgraduate study.
