Guanahacabibes, Cuba
Despite the reefs off the coast of Cuba being regarded as some of the best within the Caribbean, limited studies exist that examine the diversity, dynamics, ecology and conservation management of Cuban Coral reefs. For the past few years base-line studies have been carried out to understand the nature of the reef systems and so that the key biological characteristics of the reef systems are understood. During 2008 the Marine Sciences research group will use the base-line data to identify key biological performance criteria which can be used in the short, mid and long term to increase our understanding of the dynamics of Cuban reef systems whilst also identifying threats to reefs within the region. Ecological studies will also be implemented as in other coral reef research sites so that the functionality of reef systems can be compared between distinct bioregions.
1. Health and status of Cuban reefs
2. Identification of biological performance criteria for Cuban reefs
3. Identification of cost effective resolute methodologies to monitor rates of change of Cuban coral reef biodiversity and integrity
4. The functional ecology of Cuban reef systems
