The datasets available through the BES website are SPSS portable files. Many users will experience no problems in downloading them: simply click on the link, a prompt inquires whether you wish to save or to open the files - (we advise saving) - and the data are ready for use. However, the settings of some users' machines may be such that, when clicking on a dataset link, all that are produced are pages of more or less nonsensical text. Since there is no possibility for the BES to adjust users' local settings, the best way to download the data is to do the following:

  • Click the right-hand mouse button on the data link

  • Select 'Save Target As'

  • Save the file to the required destination, with a .sav suffix (e.g. "File3.sav")

  • Open the file either from Windows Explorer, or from SPSS itself

  • If you are still experiencing problems, please e-mail the Data Administrator at the BES in Essex
