Media Services at Colchester campus
The Media Studio has versatile studio lighting, and has a gallery (control room) associated with it, where technicians direct the cameras and manage the lighting/sound and other associated functions.
The sound-proofed studio contains:
- High-quality digital cameras and analogue cameras available for video production
- AutoCue
- Video monitors
- Chroma-Key (Blue screening) facilities
- 6 Channels of sound
- Full lighting gantry with tungsten (Fresnels and Redheads) and dimmable fluorescent lighting
In the Gallery (Control Room), there is a 4 channel Vision Mixer, an AutoCue device, video monitors, 14 channel sound desk, full comms between the studio and the gallery, 12 channel lighting desk and VT and audio playback facilities. Post production is possible using AVID and PINNACLE non-linear editing systems. There is also digital (Cool Edit Pro/Audition) equipment for high quality audio recording.
A HIGH DEFINITION location film making kit is also available (accompanied by a technician from the MMC) which includes a SONY HD camera, Matte Box with filters, Boom Mic, Tripod, Slate, lighting, reflector and field monitor.
The Media Studio has proved to be very popular, and has been used
- by the Department of Language and Linguistics to conduct and record oral examinations
- by the International Academy to record role-play exercises
- to record lectures to play in a staff member's absence
- by LiFTS (Literature, Film and Theatre Studies) students to create projects for their courses
- by External Relations to promote the university
- by Student Support as an aid to teaching
- by the Student Union to make programmes for campus tv (R:TV)
- by Lecturers and Teachers as an aid to teaching
