The Freud Memorial Lecture 2012: Winnicott's last word on the death instinct

The Freud Memorial Lecture is an annual event, open to the public and given by an eminent guest speaker.

For the 2012 lecture Jan Abram will propose that Donald Winnicott’s final formulations advance the psychoanalytic theory of aggression as distinct from Freud’s concept of the death instinct.

Presented by The Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies.

Tania Carver is the pseudonym of husband and wife writing team Martyn and Linda Waites, whose grisly, gripping and hugely enjoyable Colchester-based crime novels repeatedly feature in national bestseller lists.

Currently the Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at University of Essex, tonight Martyn talks about his influences and reads from a selection of his recent work including his 2011 release Cage of Bones.

Whether you write poetry, fiction, drama or simply keep a journal, this will enable you to explore the often complex relationship between writing and the self.

Please note there are 2 sessions today - choose between 10am and 1.30pm. Work shop lasts 2.5 hr (apprx)

The events of the Mexico 68 Olympics tell a fascinating tale of a nation struggling to represent itself to the rest of the world, while unable to quell dissatisfaction among its own population.

This panel discussion considers the gap between the intentions of the Olympic organisers in promoting Britain to the world and the backdrop of the crisis of capitalism, cuts and social unrest.

Speakers include architect John Adams, who worked on the Mexico 68 Olympic design and Professor Valerie Fraser who will discuss the student movement.
