Art History at Essex
Founded in 1967, the Department of Art History at Essex
has been recognised nationally and internationally as one of the very best in
the UK. Since 1 August this year the Departments of Art History and Philosophy
at Essex have merged to form the School of Philosophy and Art History.
Both Essex Art History and Essex Philosophy have well-earned and
well-established reputations, and both disciplinary groups have a strong record
of educating undergraduate and graduate students at all levels. Both have
achieved excellent results in recent student surveys and also in the Research
Assessment Exercise which measures research performance nationally. These
successes are a reflection of the very distinctive character of the School which
is also home to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities –
intensive, close-knit, collaborative and focused.
Our approach:
We are committed to an open and friendly approach and offering close personal
attention to individual students and their needs.
Research interests of our staff:
Staff expertise covers a wide range of interests in both teaching and research. These include painting and sculpture in
Europe and the USA, architecture and city planning from the Renaissance to the present day, Latin American art and architecture,
installation art, photography and curatorial practice.
Essex Collection of Art from Latin America
The Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA) is
an accredited museum at the University of Essex that stimulates research,
awareness and appreciation of art from Latin America among students, staff and
the public. As a resource for students, ESCALA provides the opportunity to
experience and work with a rich and diverse collection of 750 original artworks.
