INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS: Thailand & Lao PDR

Project: Study on the perceptions and attitudes of young people on issues related to violence against women and girls in Thailand.

This project involved research into young peoples perceptions and attitudes on issues related to violence against women and girls in Lao PDR in order to strengthen the evidence base on prevention of violence against women and girls in East and Southeast Asia.

Funding sources: UN Women Southeast Asia Regional Office.

The Unit conducted a study on young peoples ideas on issues related to violence against women and girls in 2012. The study, commissioned by UN Womens Southeast Asia Office, will contribute to an extensive research project led by Partners for Prevention (a coalition of UN Agencies) on attitudes and perception of adults on issues of violence against women and girls in countries across Southeast Asia.

The Unit conducted research through a series of interviews and interactive group discussions across Thailand. The data collection was preceded by a thorough study of laws, policies and social norms on violence against women in Thailand. We collected data through individual interviews and group discusions with young people ages 15-18; 534 young people participated in our research.

CCLC’s international department presented its findings, analysis and recommendations in a report and in a participatory data validation workshop held in Lao PDR (where a partner study was conducted) which included UN Women, UNICEF, the Ministry of Education, teachers and young people. While the study produced concrete recommendations for reform, it has also increased understanding of the root causes and social constructs that lead to gender based violence, an important step to achieving sustainable and meaningful change. The study will also inform the design of primary prevention interventions interventions that address the causes of violence as opposed to just focusing on incidents of violence themselves. The project was conducted in tandem with a study on perceptions and attitudes of young people in Lao PDR.
