A fact-finding committee will look into Friday’s whipping incident at New Royal High School in Saidabad. The committee, formed by the All India Teachers’ Forum for Child Rights (AITFCR) - an agency for the protection of children’s rights - will start its campaign on Monday.
It will submit its report to the National Commission For Protection of Child Rights after finding out the facts, AITFCR convener E Anjaiah told TOI.
The agency, earlier known as Bala Karmika Vimochana Vedika, has a membership of 2,500 teachers in the state, who will begin the nationwide campaign title ‘Teachers for Students Rights’.
Teachers’ representatives from Tamil Naidu, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Assam will also support the cause. The campaign was announced at the inaugural of the National Convention on Teachers against Corporal Punishment in the city on Sunday.
Speaking at the convention, chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Prof Shantha Sinha called all the teachers’ unions to fight for child rights.
“Teachers should realise that their rights are linked to the rights of the children they teach. Hence, some of their time should be spent on bringing some kind of awareness about child rights among their peers thereby stopping inhuman practices like corporal punishment."
Sinha said doing away with corporal punishment should be a non-negotiable demand. She told teachers their views on ‘how to control students without punishing them?’ would be considered while making policy initiatives against corporate punishment.
Teachers from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar expressed their solidarity in the fight against punishment. During the one-day conference, posters against corporate punishment were released.
