New York,21 May 2010 - The Annual Report of the Secretary-General to the Security Council on Children and Armed Conflict (A/64/742--S/2010/181) has been issued yesterday afternoon. The report gives an overview of the situation of children affected by conflict and action taken for their protection over the reporting period.  In mid-June the report will be discussed in the Security Council Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict.

Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict calls upon the Afghan government and its international supporters to prioritize children’s needs.
 
 Launched in New York and in Kabul, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict’s newest report, Setting the Right Priorities: Protecting Children Affected by Armed Conflict in Afghanistan, provides the most up-to-date account of the dire situation facing the children in Afghanistan. In order to achieve peace, the Afghan government, the UN Security Council and the humanitarian community must prioritize child protection, and end impunity for violators of children’s rights.

South Sudan to end the use of child soldiers

The army in Southern Sudan has pledged to demobilise all child soldiers by the end of the year.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) has established a child protection unit to fulfil the pledge.

Khmer Rouge sentence 'too short', say prosecutors

August 16, 2010

Prosecutors at the UN-backed war crimes tribunal in Cambodia are appealing against the sentence imposed on a Khmer Rouge jailer, saying it is too short.

Kaing Guek Eav, known as Comrade Duch, was given a 35-year sentence in July for crimes against humanity during the regime's rule in the 1970s.
