Freewire Phone
Freewire Phone

Freewire Phone is what the techies call VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol system. Basically, all your calls go through your University’s internet connection. Instead of a conventional handset, you get a ‘virtual’ phone on your PC screen. You can hear people on the other end through your PC speakers, and they can hear you through your computer’s microphone.

Alternatively you can request a digital handset from the Main Accommodation office or University Square reception to connect directly between your PC and the internet socket, or if you do not have a PC directly through the internet socket. These handsets work just like a normal phone and do not require your PC to be switched on for you to make or receive calls. A 20 pounds returnable deposit and payment of just 5 pounds per term is required should you wish to have a handset in your room.

Connecting you with the University
Either during the internet set up process or shortly afterwards we strongly recommend installing the appropriate software and signing up for the phone service. This will allow you to make calls to University departments and services at no cost by simply entering 224 followed by the four digit extension number.

This is very important should you wish to call a Residents’ Assistance or the Patrol Staff outside of office hours. All university departments and services on the Colchester campus can be dialled directly through this system using the 4 digit extension number prefixed with 224 without the need to put any credit onto your account.

Should you wish at access any university extension number of the out of ours support services from a mobile device you will need to dial 01206 87 followed by the four digit extension number.

Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing a problem connecting to the network there are some actions that you can take to ensure you get the right support to solve your problem.

1.    Firstly either try your device in a flat mate’s room using their cable and socket or try another device in your room

2.    If the alternative device does not work in your room or your device does work in your friend’s room the problem is with your socket or cable. If possible then check your cable in your flat mate's room. If your device works then the problem is your socket and this can be reported directly to StudentCom. If it does not your cable is faulty and you can collect a replacement from one of the Accommodation offices or the Computer service helpdesk on 01275 793412 or email at: support@studentcom.co.uk.

3.    If the alternative device woks in your room or your device does not work in your friends room this indicates their is a configuration issue with your device and you should take it to the Computer Service helpdesk located on level 5 and accessed through entrance 4SW on Square 4 to seek assistance in configuring your device to access the network.
