Accommodation Charges and deposits

Accommodation charges

Your Letter of Allocation will give details of your room, the amounts you are due to pay each term and the dates that these payments are due. All accommodation charges are made termly in advance.

Payment can be made on line and a discount of £16 per term is available if you pay by this means by the due date. This is a secure link using a credit card and in order to take advantage of this method of payment you will need your PRID e.g. SMITH12345 which is shown on your Letter of Allocation. You will also need to have a University log on name and password in order to see the full details of the account. New students will have to register in order to obtain a log on name and can pay using the internet after registration in October.

Pay your accommodation charges online by debit or credit card.

Alternatively you can pay by cheque or credit/debit card (except American Express or Diners Club) in the Income Office or by post. Cheques should be made payable to 'University of Essex' and mail should be addressed to Income Office, Finance Section, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester CO4 3 SQ. The Income office is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Returning Student Deposits

It will be necessary to pay a £250 deposit before you are made an offer of accommodation. You will be able to make this payment by credit/debit card as part of the online application process.

You will also be able to pay your deposit by credit/debit card or UK cheque in person at the main Accommodation Office on the North Towers Causeway (opposite Tawney Tower).

Please do not try and pay your deposit at the Income Office in Finance. We have experienced difficulty in tracing such payments in the past and this option has thus been discontinued.

Please also note that you will not be made an offer of accommodation until your deposit has been received.

If you reject your accommodation offer we will refund your deposit less an administrative fee of £25. If we are unable to offer you accommodation your deposit will be refunded in full.

On the application form you will be asked to select your preferred locations. Please select these in order of preference and do not select any location which you would not be prepared to accept. Please note that we cannot guarantee that you will be offered your first choice of accommodation.

Please note that once you have paid the deposit and accepted the offer you have formed a contract which is binding and you will not be able to give notice on the room unless you withdraw from the University. If you do withdraw from the University you will be able to receive a refund of your deposit less an administrative fee of £25 provided you contact us before the start of the 2012 - 2013 academic year.

New Postgraduate Student Deposits

If a deposit is required to secure an allocation this is paid directly to the Accommodation Office. Details of how you intend to pay should be entered on your accommodation application form or offer acceptance form. Payment may be made online by credit card (except American Express and Diners Club), cheque in pounds sterling or bank draft in pounds sterling. Cheques and drafts should be made payable to 'University of Essex' and your PG number should be written on the reverse or attached to all methods of payment.

After accepting your offer your deposit will only be refunded if you confirm in writing before 2 September 2013 that you do not intend to move into the accommodation.

We regret that no deposit refunds are possible for offers which have been accepted after 2 September 2013.

Please note that for all such refunds a deduction of £25 will be made for administrative costs.

Students who are rejected by Essex may have their deposit refunded after the 2 September 2013 deadline.

PLEASE QUOTE YOUR FULL NAME AND PG NUMBER OR PRID ON ALL CORRESPONDENCE. THANKYOU.
