Other Facilities at the Colchester Campus

On campus there are cafeterias, restaurants, bars, general stores, a Post Office, banks and a launderette.

Studying at the University of Essex opens up lots of opportunities for taking part in sport – whether it’s joining a team to play your favourite sport or trying something completely new.

The Sports Centre and its surrounding playing fields are located across 40 rolling acres of Wivenhoe Park, Colchester Campus. It offers extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities – including a brand new £1.4 million state-of-the-art gym (which opened in July 2010) with state-of-the-art fitness technology in light, spacious air-conditioned comfort, fitness studios.

The Campus Shop: Your own personal convenience store selling all the essentials, including lunchtime sandwiches, newspapers, magazines, toiletries, fruit and vegetables, frozen meals, mobile top-ups, cigarettes, beers, wines and spirits, and cash-back.
The Union Shop: Smaller version of the Campus Shop, specialising in stationary, university clothing (including hoodies and t-shirts), organic sandwiches and, our favourite, pick n’ mix sweets…
Go Go Global: Your new international convenience store, selling food and ingredients from across the globe, including China, Japan, Korea, India, Poland, Greece, Mexico, Turkey, Africa and the Caribbean. You want it, we get it!
Waterstones Book Shop: an on-campus branch of the chain of high-street booksellers.

post office

There is a Post Office on Square 4 which offers a full postal service. In addition it operates a dry cleaning service, film processing service, rail and coach ticket service (including airport services) and local bus passes.

launderette

There is a central launderette on campus situated in the Hexagon off Square 4, and a further laundrette within Harwich Court in the South Courts. Both these launderettes have recently been upgraded and new features include:

Laundry view – online facility to check the availability of the washers and dryers in the laundry room.
Cashless card system – online top up facility that removes the need to carry cash. There is a machine situated in the laundry room where you will have the opportunity to purchase a card, you can then top this up from the comfort of your study room using the online facility.
Coin operated machines – There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer available in each laundry room for those who choose not to use the cashless card facility.
Upgraded machines and facilities – Many of the washing machines and dryers have been replaced with new models. More seating and folding areas have also been added where space permitted.

Prices – Wash cycle £2.50, Dry cycle £1.00

There is also a launderette facility at the University Quays and one at University Square in Southend. All launderettes are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The current cost are £2.00 for a wash cycle and £1.00 for a 40 minute drying cycle.

There are two banks on campus - Barclays Bank on Square 4 and Lloyds Bank off Square 3, near the Students’ Union Bar. Both banks have automatic cash dispensing facilities outside.
