Smoking Policy
The University’s No Smoking Policy does not extend to the
residences. A number of requests are received with respect to
non-smoking flats. We do attempt to accommodate as many non-smoking
students together as possible but at the present time we do not
guarantee that there will not be smokers present in your
accommodation throughout the course of the year.
Smoking is permitted in the student bedrooms within flats that are
designated as smoking flats. However, smoking is strictly prohibited
in the public areas and shared facilities of all accommodation
irrespective of whether the flat is designated as a smoking flat or
a non-smoking flat.
Public areas and shared facilities include all kitchens, corridors
and lobbies within the accommodation buildings.
Electrical Equipment
Overseas students in particular are reminded that the standard UK
supply voltage is 220/240 volts. Study-bedrooms are provided with
13amp socket outlets.
All electrical equipment brought into study-bedrooms must be electrically
safe and random checks will be made by the Fire and Safety Office to ensure that
electrical safety is maintained.
Typical problems found with electrical equipment in the past have been worn
leads and leads joined in an unsafe way. It is suggested that students should
check these particular aspects before bringing electrical equipment into their
rooms.
Insurance
Endsleigh insurance services is the provider of student
accommodation insurance. The
University has arranged a block halls policy for all students in
university managed accommodation to
insure their personal effects. There is no additional charge for the
standard insurance cover provided. However if you need to increase
your level of cover or purchase additional cover for specific items
not included in the standard policy this can be done through Endsleigh Insurance services directly. The Insurance certificate
detailing levels of cover and what is included in the policy can be viewed in
PDF format from here*. Further details including contact details,
options to extend cover, a summary of the standard
cover provided and details on how to make a claim are available from
