Returning students

Applications are now open if you'd like to live on campus again next year. They will be dealt with on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to live with your friends, please make sure you list all their PRIDs when applying. Each of your friends must also submit their own application.

When you fill in your application form, list your choice of locations in order of preference. Don't select any type of room you're not prepared to accept. You can see all the different accommodation options however not all areas will be available to returning students for 2017-18.

Overseas (non EU) undergraduate students

You're guaranteed accommodation as long as you apply by 5pm on Friday 13 January 2017. Before completing an application, please make sure you've read the application guide (.docx) carefully.

Selecting your preferred accommodation

On the application form you will be asked to select your preferred locations. Please select these in order of preference and don't select any location which you wouldn't be prepared to accept. We cannot guarantee that you'll be offered your first choice of accommodation.

Living with your friends

You're welcome to request an allocation with your friends. You should list their PRIDs in the 'additional information' field on the online application form. Each of your friends must also submit their own separate application and have the same preferences as you.

How to apply

Please make sure you select 2017-18 from the academic year drop-down on the first page of our application website.

UK / EU undergraduate students

We don't have any availability for 2017-18. However, you can apply via the waiting list when this opens in September 2017, or if you want to secure accommodation early in the private sector, contact SU Lets.

Postgraduate students

You're guaranteed accommodation as long as you apply by 5pm on Friday 13 January 2017.

Unable to secure University accommodation

If you're unable to secure University accommodation you have the option to live locally in privately owned rental properties. The Students' Union's house-finding service SU Lets will be able to help you find the perfect place to live.

SU Advice can offer information about tenant rights and responsibilities, about repairs, repossession, eviction, harassment by landlords, contracts, deposits and much more.

Intermitting students

If you have withdrawn temporarily from Essex (intermitted) during the first term of the first year of study and decide to return the following academic year, you may re-apply for accommodation.

How to apply

Contact us in January of the year in which you intend to return to your studies.

If you're an overseas (non EU) undergraduate or a postgraduate student, you're guaranteed accommodation if you apply by the deadline. If you're a UK/EU undergraduate student, we can't guarantee accommodation but anticipate good availability.

The deadline for all accommodation applications is 5pm on Friday 13 January 2017.

Promotional offer

If you apply by 5pm on Friday 13 January 2017, you'll also be eligible for one of our promotional offers below. You can apply after the date above, but you won't qualify for any of the promotions.

All of our accommodation is charged on a nightly basis so the rates below may vary slightly. These promotions aren't available for studio accommodation.

  • Returning student offer - one year deal

    As a returning student applying by the deadline date and you'll automatically receive £200 cashback.

    • Weekly rate: £139.30
    • Annual rate*: £5,650.60 (inclusive of cashback offer)

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

  • Returning student offer - two year deal

    To save even more money you could sign up to our two year deal and benefit from a lower rental rate frozen for the term of your contract. You will also receive free summer accommodation.

    The rent will be at the following rates:

    • weekly rate: £130.13
    • annual rate*: £5,465.46
    • overall saving: £945.80

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

  • Returning student - on 2nd year of a two year deal offer

    As a valued customer at University Square, if you apply for accommodation by the deadline date, you'll automatically receive a loyalty bonus of £500 cashback. You will also receive free summer accommodation.

    Your rent will be:

    • annual rate*: £5,350.60

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

South Essex College students

We have rooms available for South Essex College students at University Square.

Make an application by 5pm on Friday 13 January 2017 to take advantage of our promotional offers below. Applications can be made after this date but will not qualify for any of the promotions.

Payment

When you receive an accommodation offer you have one week to accept and pay your £250 prepayment. You will be able to make this payment by credit/debit card as part of the online acceptance process.

Colchester Campus

You can also pay by credit/debit card or UK cheque at the Information Desk at your Student Services Hub. Payments cannot be made at the Cash Desk or via online student payments.

Southend Campus

You can also pay by credit/debit card or UK cheque at the Cash Desk at your Student Services Hub, but make sure you specify that the payment is for your accommodation prepayment. Payments can't be made via online student payments.

Terms and conditions

If you accept your accommodation offer you will be entering into a legal contract with Accommodation Essex and you will be liable to pay the rent for your room for the period stated on your offer letter.

Please read our Terms and Conditions of Residence carefully before accepting any offer of accommodation. Contact your Student Services Hub if you have any queries.

Incoming study abroad students

A number of rooms will be made available to part-year students, but accommodation may be limited. Applications will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. If you apply after the quota of rooms is reached, you will be allocated an empty room, if these exist, in date order of receipt of application, until all rooms have been filled. Remaining part-year students will be placed on the waiting list.

How to apply

All applications need to be made via Essex Abroad and not the applicant portal. You will then be allocated accommodation via our waiting list.

Applied for accommodation before your study abroad started

If you've already completed an application form for accommodation prior to commencing your study abroad period, you're not required to fill out another one. Please check with Essex Abroad and they will be able to advise you.
