Returning students

  • Intermitting students

    What you need to do

    If you have withdrawn temporarily from the University (intermitted) during the first term of the first year of study, and decide to return to the University the following academic year, you may reapply for accommodation.

    How to apply

    Contact us in the spring of the year in which you intend to return to your studies.

  • Returning undergraduate and postgraduate students

    Applications for returning undergraduate and postgraduate students for 2013-14 have now closed.

    Full-time students may apply for accommodation via our waiting list which opens at 10am on Tuesday 3 September 2013. Our allocations policy gives details of how we prioritise applications made to the waiting list.

  • Part-year incoming Study Abroad students

    What we offer

    We try to accommodate as many part-year students as possible, but accommodation may be limited.

    A number of rooms will be made available to part-year students. Applications will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Students who apply after the quota of rooms is reached will be allocated empty rooms, if these exist, in date order of receipt of application, until all rooms have been filled. Remaining part-year students will be placed on the waiting list.

  • Southend returning students

    Benefits of living in University Square

    Current University or South Essex College (SEC) students returning to study next year can benefit from:

    • fixed price - no hidden administration charges or damage deposit payments;
    • all energy bills, internet and housekeeping included;
    • option to live with your friends - apply together and share a flat in 2013;
    • student common room with satellite TV and Wi-Fi;
    • high quality, modern, spacious flats;
    • 24-hour staff presence;
    • Residents' Assistants living on site providing support and community activities;
    • two-minute walk to campus;
    • close to shops, bars, music venues town centre and public transport; and
    • central courtyard and Evolve Gym next door (additional charges apply for use of Evolve Gym).

    You can apply for accommodation online.

    Paying your deposit

    You will need pay a £250 (GB pounds) pre-payment deposit before you are made an offer of accommodation. You will be able to make this payment by credit/debit card as part of the online application process. The pre-payment deposit is deducted from your first term's rent.

    • Your deposit must be paid before applications close on 2 October 2013.

    You will not be made an offer of accommodation until your deposit has been received.

    If you have not paid your deposit during your online application you should pay it in person as soon as possible afterwards at Southend University Square Reception. You can pay by credit/debit card or UK cheque.

    Important: Do not try and pay your deposit separately via Online Student Payments or at the Finance Office in the Gateway Building. We will have difficulty in tracing such payments and we may not therefore be able to make you an offer of accommodation.

  • South Essex College students

    What we offer

    You can apply to live in University Square if you are a SEC higher or further education student over the age of 18.

    All SEC students are housed in their own area and have the opportunity to take advantage of all the benefits of living in this purpose-built student accommodation.

    How to apply

    If you are a current University of Essex or South Essex College student wishing to live in University Square in your subsequent year of study, you can apply now for the 2013-14 academic year.

Terms and conditions

If you are allocated accommodation you will enter into a legal contract with Accommodation Essex and you will be liable to pay the rent for your room for the period stated on your offer letter.
