Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of our work.
Sustainability is a core principle of all of our research, teaching and
business activities at the University of Essex.
We want Essex to be one of the greenest universities in the country and aim
to be an educational model for healthy and sustainable living.
Across our three campuses we hope to set an example to other institutions of
higher education and to regional bodies.
Our approach includes:
- encouraging our students to get involved in sustainable
initiatives;
- ensuring our research and teaching really engages with the
key issues facing the planet;
- giving our graduates the skills and leadership capabilities
they will need to create more sustainable ways of living and
working in the future; and

living at the University of Essex (.pdf).
Green Task Force
Our staff and students are working together on the
Task Force to co-ordinate and implement sustainability policy and
initiatives at the University. Our seven environmental priorities are:
- recycling;
- biodiversity;
- energy management;
- local and fair-trade food;
- sustainable transport;
- green procurement; and
- carbon footprint.
Interdisciplinary Centre for Environment and Society
Our Interdisciplinary Centre for Environment and Society (iCES)
is designed to increase collaboration between disciplines and departments. We
are engaged in a range of environmental research, teaching and training, and in
outreach through publications, seminars and workshops. The geographic focus of
our work ranges from the local to national and international, and covers both
industrialised and developing countries.
Environmental courses
Sustainability is a core element of many of our
Undergraduate and
Postgraduate courses.
