Elections to Council

Senate Election to the membership of Council 2017-18 to 2019-20

Nominations are sought for two members of Senate, at least one of whom should be a Head of Department/School to stand for election to Council for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20 (three year term).

The membership of Council is defined by Statute 1 and amplified by Ordinance 12 which states that:

“The five Academic Staff members of the Senate election by the Senate to the Council…..shall include at least three Heads of Department and at least one member who is not a Professor at the time of election.”

Current members of the Council elected by Senate, whose term will continue in 2017-18, are:
  • Professor Nancy Kula -  Head of Department, Language and Linguistics
  • Dr Nilufer Demirkan-Jones - Head of Department, Essex Pathways
  • Professor Joan Busfield - elected member

The vacancies arise following the completion of term of Professor Christine Raines - Head of School, Biological Sciences and Professor Fabian Freyenhagen, Head of School, Philosophy and Art History.

The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 7 June 2017. Nominations must be received by the Governance Office (Room 5.602 Rab Butler Building) (email: elections@essex.ac.uk) by 5pm on that date.

  • A Nomination form is available  for download. The form must be signed by the nominee and by two members of Senate, one of whom must be from a department different from that of the nominee.
  • Nominees are requested to provide a brief biography and statement in support of their nomination, in no more than 350 words, on the pro forma on the second page of the nomination form.
  • Nominees are requested to complete an Equality and Diversity monitoring form.
  • A list of those eligible to stand for election is available for download.
  • Members of Senate who are on study leave in 2017-18 should be able to attend meetings and meet the other requirements of Council membership. Please see the further information below.
  • The election will be held from midday Friday 9 June 2017 to midday Friday 23 June 2017. Should a ballot be necessary, ballot information will be sent by email to academic staff members of Senate on Friday 9 June 2017. Please note that there will be an electronic ballot only and no paper ballot will be held.

In accordance with Ordinance 16, the Academic Staff members of Senate elected by Senate to the Council, shall constitute the Senate Agenda Group. The Senate Agenda Group meets about a month before each Senate meeting to discuss possible agenda items for discussion under Section A of the Senate agenda, which covers items relating to academic policy and strategy. The chair of the Senate Agenda Group meets with the Vice-Chancellor and others shortly afterwards to discuss the Senate agenda and, where appropriate, to request that items be placed on the agenda. The Senate Agenda Group may recommend to the Vice-Chancellor that an extraordinary meeting of the Senate be called to discuss an urgent matter of academic policy or strategy.

In addition to the Council Away Days, Council Meetings and Induction, Council members are required to undertake courses on Equality and Diversity, the Unconscious Bias, Channel General Awareness and Health and Safety.
