Developing our new Strategic Plan

Consultation

The University is now in the process of developing our new Strategic Plan for 2013-14 to 2018-19 and as a member of the University community you are invited to have your say as part of the staff and student consultation process.

Consultation on the draft Strategic Plan started at Senate on 23 January 2013. When the process is complete, the final version of the Plan will be considered for approval by the University’s Council in Summer 2013.

Background

In 2012 University Council approved a Vision that the University should be firmly established in the Top 25 of the UK’s universities by the end of 2018-19. The strengths and successes of the University mean that we are well-placed to achieve this ambition. At the same time, the University operates in an ever more competitive external environment – which means achieving our ambition will be a significant challenge. To ensure that the University meets this challenge a new Strategic Plan is being developed: it is of crucial importance to the University, as it will establish a roadmap to determine our direction over the next six years.

If we are to achieve our Vision the University will need to draw on the abilities and commitment of all its members, and this needs to begin with the development of the Plan itself.  We are therefore undertaking an extensive University-wide consultation on the draft Strategic Plan, so that the final version of the Plan takes into consideration as wide a range of perspectives and views as it can.

Consultation period and how to comment

The draft strategic plan that all staff and students are invited to comment on is now published below. Please send your comments by e-mail to: spconsultation (non-Essex users add @essex.ac.uk). Please note, responses should be submitted by 29 March 2013. All comments received will be co-ordinated by the Strategic Planning and Change team, and added to other feedback received.

There will also be opportunities to provide feedback through committees and team meetings, and we are planning three lunchtime roadshows, hosted by members of University Steering Group, at Colchester and Southend Campuses with a video link to our Loughton Campus during February and March. These will give additional opportunities to find out more about how the Strategic Plan is being developed, explore the key themes, ask questions, and provide comment.

Consultation documents

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all members of the University community to comment on the draft Strategic Plan, and thank you in advance for your views and ideas as we shape the future of the University.

Professor Anthony Forster
Vice-Chancellor
