As the largest town in Essex and a lively seaside resort with good
transport links, Southend is a popular choice with its six million annual
visitors and students looking for a dynamic university experience.
Our campus is located in the heart of the town centre so you will be able
to enjoy the vast array of entertainment, shops, bars, restaurants and
nightlife on offer.
Venues and attractions
Coastline and beach – with seven miles of coastline, Southend
offers you the chance to take part in a range of leisure activities
including sailing, windsurfing, swimming, kite surfing and cycling. The
seafront entertainment venues include ten-pin bowling, a marine life centre
and theme park.
Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre at Garons Park – hosts a
variety of sporting classes and activities including basketball, cricket and
tennis. The Olympic diving facility at the new Southend Swimming and Diving
Centre was used as a training base for the British Olympic diving team
before the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Cultural venues – Southend boasts art galleries, several theatres
and an eight-screen cinema.
Live music – Southend is famous for its live music scene with
venues hosting a mix of new and alternative music.
Special events – you should watch out for the special annual
events held throughout the year including the carnival, folk festival,
sailing regatta and Europe's largest free airshow.
Nearby attractions
Leigh-on-Sea – this traditional fishing village has become a
popular destination for those who enjoy a mix of old and new. You can find
boutique and niche shops plus traditional quayside pubs, wine bars and
modern restaurants.
Hadleigh Castle – provides panoramic views of the coastline,
stretching out to Kent and was used for the mountain biking competition
at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Hamlet Court Road – located on the outskirts of town, this
cosmopolitan area is a hub for international cuisine, fashionable bars and
night life.
Excellent transport links
Southend Central railway station is next to The Gateway Building and
London Fenchurch Street can be reached in only 50 minutes. Our second train
station, Southend Victoria, links Southend with London Liverpool Street. A
bus station, located just behind the High Street, serves the town, Stansted
Airport and surrounding area. National Express and airport coach services
also have pick up points around the Southend area, ensuring that the town is
easily accessible from across the UK.
Since April 2012, a number of European destinations also fly
into London Southend Airport.
