East 15, Loughton Campus: facilities

The Hatfields Campus consists of a beautiful Georgian dower house, set in five acres of lawns, with orchards, flowerbeds and a small lake, providing an idyllic atmosphere for study, relaxation and performance.

It is one of three East 15 sites in Loughton, the others being Roding House and the Technical Unit.

Each site is just a five-minute walk from the nearest London Underground station, Debden, at the east end of the Central Line and only thirty minutes, by tube, from Liverpool Street. The Central Line provides access to Central London and all the other major tube and mainline stations, including Eurostar.

Facilities at the Loughton Campus

Studios

Studios at the Hatfields Campus include the Courtyard Studios (six large rehearsal spaces, a radio studio and a screening room), the Orchard Studios (providing three additional rehearsal spaces) and the Dance Studio (which provides first-class facilities for ballet, jazz and other movement work). The Radio Studio is equipped for the recording of radio plays and voice-over work, while a Screening Room is used for the screening of films on both DVD and VHS on a large screen, with stereo speakers. This is used for lecturing, guest speakers and for the screening of films produced at East 15.

The Corbett Theatre

The Hatfields Campus is also home to the Corbett Theatre, named in honour of Harry H Corbett, an important Theatre Workshop member and early benefactor of East 15. The building is a medieval tithe barn that was dismantled and transported to Hatfields in the 1960s. Its unusual origins create a unique performance space with a special atmosphere. Combined with full technical facilities, tiered seating for 125 people and fitted dressing rooms, the theatre provides an excellent resource for public productions. Lectures, rehearsals and technical classes also take place here, while the adjacent and newly extended Theatre Foyer Bar and Cafe provides a social meeting point for students and staff.

Computing facilities and the library

Computer rooms are based at the Hatfields Campus (there are also computer facilities at Roding House and at the Technical Unit) which include computers, internet access, printers and photocopier access. In addition there is a new and growing library within Hatfields House.

Roding House and the costume department

Just a five-minute walk from the Hatfields Campus is Roding House, a new £1.3 million facility with ten rehearsal rooms, a computer room, a green room/cafe and sound recording studio. The costume department is based here, which serves as an invaluable part of professional training.

The Technical Unit

The Technical Unit is a £1.5 million facility, near Roding House, which houses the technical department and contains a workshop, paint shop, prop shop, prop storage facilities and teaching spaces.
