Fire: Emergency Action
Shout Out:
- Do not attempt to extinguish fires unless you have received training.
- Raise the alarm verbally, evacuate and break the glass on a red call point on your way out.
- Evacuate the area immediately you hear the alarm. If you are unsure that the alarm applies to you, evacuate anyway. Do not delay to finish tasks, collect items or lock doors. Your safety is paramount. Failure to evacuate is a disciplinary offence as you also endanger others.
- Close doors behind you as you leave. This will slow the spread of fire and smoke considerably and help protect other people. Do not lock them unless there is a high security risk.
- Assist disabled persons. They will generally have prepared escape plans which you can help them with.
- Following the green running man and arrow signs, will direct you on the shortest exit route. Signs with wheelchair symbols designate routes suitable for the disabled.
- Report information on areas affected by
smoke, the nature of the fire, people who may be affected or are missing as soon as
possible. Report to the person in charge of the assembly point
or:
- Colchester campus call Patrol Staff by dialling 2222 from the nearest internal phone outside the alarm area, 01206 872222 from a mobile phone, or 224 2222 from University residence emergency phone or studentcom.
- Southend Campus call 8208 from an internal phone or 01702 328208 from a mobile phone
- Loughton campus call reception on: 020 8508 5983.
- Keep away from the doors once clear of the alarm area. The Fire Service may need access.
- Never enter an area where a red light is flashing. Some of the University's buildings have zones with flashing red lights to indicate that this is where the fire is.
- Do not enter when the alarm stops, it may have been silenced for the Fire Service. Wait to be told by Patrol Staff/ Security or for the flashing light to stop.

Stay Out:
Please also note that equipment is provided for your safety and is strategically sited around the premises. It includes extinguishers, hose reels and smoke detectors. Interfering with it endangers other people and is, therefore, a disciplinary offence.
