Wingate Scholarships

Since 1988, the Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation has provided annual Scholarships to individuals of great potential or proven excellence. The Scholarships allow individuals in a wide variety of fields to pursue projects in an academic or a non-academic context. In many cases a Wingate Scholarship has allowed an outstanding individual the chance to realise a project that might not otherwise have been supported by more conventional funding bodies in the UK or Europe.

The Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from more mature students and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Wingate Scholarships attempt to provide funding for cross-disciplinary projects that might not fall comfortably into any of the conventional funding categories.

The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust

The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust was set up in memory of two generations of the Ferguson family to promote their particular interests in education, international friendship and understanding, and the promotion of world peace and development.  Postgraduate PhD students, whether from overseas or from the UK, may be awarded a grant to help meet tuition costs, but only in respect of the last year of their course.

Grant cheques will not be paid to the applicant but to the University at which they are studying.

Research Fund

The Centre has a small fund to help our research students with exceptional expenses related to their research. The total amount available will be decided each year and will be available from the beginning of the financial year (August). Guidelines will be included in the handbook, but the principle will be:

  1. whether the expense is exceptional (not fees or ordinary travel expenses, books, photocopying, etc.);
  2. whether it is essential or very advantageous to your research;
  3. whether it adds to the research reputation of the Centre, especially its international reputation;
  4. whether it enhances your research standing and career prospects.

We cannot promise to fund all requests, and you must set out your request in writing, with enough detail to make clear how it meets the above criteria and the Notes for Information on the Application Form.
