In honour of Mental Health Awareness Week, I want to talk about how to create a comfortable and uplifting environment in your student accommodation room. Honestly, for a long time, I didn't think it mattered much, but during my second year of studying, I realised how much our room affects our well-being and, conversely, how it can signal problems in our mental health.

I decided to make some changes when I noticed that during mental lows, I could go a long time without tidying up my room: leaving clothes on chairs, scattering items from my backpack on the floor, and so on. Gathering my strength, I identified several key points that would ensure my emotional comfort while I'm at home.

Tips on organising your space

The first change was committing to regular room cleaning – yeah, that hit close to home. But I noticed that if I make tidying my desk a habit, orderliness tends to spread to my mind. Overall, cleanliness creates a pleasant impression of the space I'm in.

Colour palette matters too – my room had white walls for the longest time, which, as it turned out, also affected my mood – it felt too much like a hospital. So, I decided to fill the room with my favourite colours, changing the bedding and hanging bright posters on the walls. By the way, my posters have my own manifestos written on them – desires or convictions that I repeat.

In general, you can experiment with different colours in your room and see which one you like best and which contributes to productivity. The devil is in the details. I absolutely loved decorating my room with various decorative items: cushions, blankets, plants. I hung travel photo cards on the wall in front of my desk, and on the desk itself, I put up a framed picture and created a small installation: I arranged my favourite jewellery on wooden plates. It's beautiful and convenient because my jewellery is always at hand.

Lastly, I want to touch on airing and scenting the room. I feel more comfortable in cool temperatures, it makes me move more and do more. As for scenting, I use diffusers or home perfumes. Recently, I discovered a new scent – lavender, which I spray over my bed before sleep – it feels like falling asleep in a lavender field, which is really amazing! And as someone who sometimes struggles with insomnia, I find this remedy very effective.

I wanted to share my personal experience of room improvement because I only recently discovered the value of the morning cleaning ritual. Hoping that this might resonate with you, I leave you with my thoughts to ponder.

Until next time!
